Quoting a previous post is a good way to let people know you are responding to a specific message in a discussion thread.  To do this click the Quote link on the upper right-hand side of the post you want to respond to.  It will show the post as a quote in your response.  You can edit down the text in the quote to show which part of the post you are responding to.  This will help prevent confusion when you are replying to a post other than the most recent made.

Here is an example of what a quote looks like inside of a reply post:
