Best Practices Guidelines

To be developed under the leadership of NSC, NHTSA, FHWA and FMCSA during 2001. An expert panel has been assembled to aid in the identification of key elements and desirable practices for traffic records systems.

Second year for program, seeking state-of-the-art practices and applications in various disciplines of traffic records including data collection, management, analysis and applications

Intelligent Transportation Systems

In process of developing communications and organizational connections to greater ITS community and its involvement with highway safety information issues -- examples include TRB's ITS/Archive Data User Service and ITS America

National Agenda

Continue the promotion of the National Agenda for the Improvement of Highway Safety Information systems, particularly in conjunction with NSC's Safety Agenda for the Nation. Utilize concepts developed in the National Agenda as a foundation for the TRC move towards professional membership status.

Electronic Communication

With the traffic records web site recording over 180,000 contacts last year and the growing dominance of electronic communications, this subcommittee is exploring future web/internet options for the TRC as well as the role of electronic communications in conducting TRC business.

Membership

The TRC membership list has been updated and improved in both content and accuracy. A significant issue currently under consideration is the possible dues or membership fee structure which might accompany the establishment of a professional society.

Operating Rules

Both the Operating Guidelines and Rules received major updates during 2000. Focus currently is on how development of a professional society will impact guidelines and rules

History

2001 will mark the 28th year of the Traffic Records Committee and the 27th International Traffic Records Forum, which will return to New Orleans, site of the original Forum in December 1975. A history of the Traffic Records Committee is currently being compiled/updated and will be posted on the traffic records web site.

2001 Forum

The Forum program and registration brochure are out. They can be accessed at www.traffic-records.org/forum2001/. Due to the success of the 2000 Forum, the 2001 Forum will include expanded offerings for both general and break-out sessions as well as additional training opportunities. Please join us at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, July 28-August 3, 2001.

2002 Forum

The site of the 2002 Forum will be Orlando, Florida. Negotiation with potential facilities is nearing completion.

ANSI D-16 Manual on Classification of Motor Vehicle Traffic Accidents

An update of the current D-16, published in 1996, is underway. Key efforts for 2001 include promotion of the uses and applications of D-16 by states and locals as well as training to individual states. A session on state applications and uses will be held at this year's Forum.
