Training Session 1
Linking and Analyzing Incomplete Traffic Records with CODES 2000 Software

Location - Durango 1
Moderator - Sandy Johnson

Abstract
This one-day tutorial will demonstrate how to use probabilistic record linkage and multiple imputation to link and analyze traffic records and injury treatment records.  The techniques presented do not require unique ID’s on the records, and they are effective even if the records have missing or incorrect data.  Linkage and analysis methods will be demonstrated by using CODES 2000 and other software to measure the effect of wearing a helmet on inpatient hospital charges for motorcycle riders involved in crashes.  Participants will understand how data linkage and improvement in the quality of state data dramatically increases the power of state data for highway safety analysis.

Times -
8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.           Linking Records Using CODES 2000 Software

10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.       Validating Linkage Results Using CODES 2000

A&I Online: Bridging the Gap Between Safety Information and the People Who Need It

 Location - Coronado Q
Moderator - Betsy Benkowski

Abstract -
Invest an hour and one half of your time and learn about Analysis and Information (A&I) Online, an Internet tool that offers an improved way to communicate safety information to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the motor carrier industry, other government agencies, and the American People.  Perhaps you will become one of A&I Online’s frequent users or are simply interested in learning effective ways of presenting large amounts of data to interested users.  This session will provide an introduction to A&I online, share with you the lessons learned by FMCSA in developing the website, and walk-through real examples of how the tool is applicable to the many facets of the motor carrier industry.  This is a hands-on session so get ready to think about and explore the possibilities of A&I Online.  Over 70,000 users a month rely on A&I online to:

bullet

Obtain safety information about thousands of commercial truck and bus companies

bullet

Measure the effectiveness of FMCSA safety programs

bullet

Identify truck-related safety problems in specific geographical areas and

bullet

Become familiar with current and completed research conducted at the FMCSA

Come join us and learn about A&I Online --bridging the gap between safety information and the people who need it!

BTS TransStats System - Hands-On

 Location - Coronado Q
Moderator -  Richard Paddock

Abstract -
The US-DOT Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) is chartered to provide transportation data resources to the US-DOT as well as the rest of the transportation community.  Since it's creation a few years ago, BTS has compiled a massive inventory of US-DOT data files and developed an extensive Metadata Inventory of those systems and files.  In addition, they have developed a very flexible and powerful web-based tool for accessing the metadata, as well as the actual data files - TransStats.
The TransStats web site provides access to many of the US-DOT data resources and allows the user to perform various ad hoc queries and analyses.  This session will provide an overview of the TransStats web site as well as a discussion of its future.
Those participating in the Sunday hands-on training session will be provided an opportunity to work with the new web site and to provide BTS needs of state and local safety data users.
