 Lt. Tim Sharkey joined the Louisiana State Police in February 1983 and upon completion of the training academy was assigned to Troop L in Mandeville as a road trooper.  In March 1987 he was chosen as one of twenty-one (21) troopers to be assigned to the newly formed Motor Carrier Safety Unit.  He served as a Motor Carrier Field Enforcement trooper in Region I until September 1994 when he was transferred to Headquarters where he assumed the position of trooper in the Administrative section of the MCSAP unit.

In May 1995 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and assumed the responsibilities of the MCSAP Program Administrative Sergeant.  In August 1997 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and now serves as the Administrative Lieutenant over the MCSAP unit.

Lt. Sharkey has been an Associate Staff Instructor with the U.S. Department of Transportation, Transportation Safety Institute and has instructed over 1000 motor carrier safety enforcement officers in many states across the country.  Lt. Sharkey and his wife Elsie have three children and reside in Kentwood, Louisiana.
